Future Culture
Design Fundamentals was an exploration into my Polish heritage, and a deep dive into the textile traditions that I am connected to through my lineage. Throughout this project I got to research my Grandfather’s birthplace: Wejherowo, which is a part of the Kashubia region in Poland. I specifically researched Kashubian embroidery, which is characterised by motifs of specific flowers in the area, swirly, delicate detailing, and a 7 tone colour palette, each colour representative of an aspect of Kashubian culture. Taking these ideas I reimagined them in a contemporary context, and with a flavour of my own artistic style, which features expressive brush strokes, bold colours, and variety of texture and 3D elements. Sustainability played a key role in this project as well, as I utilised a second hand table cloth to make my final garment, and made it low waste by using hand dyed fabric scraps to add decorative appliqué.
